This small clay mask is made in the form of an Olmec. Olmec means 'the people from the caucho land'. That is the name that archeologist gave the 'La Venta culture'. The Olmecs are known to be the bringers of the Mother culture to Mesoamerica. They brought with them the writing, the calendar, the Ball game and the building of pyramid temples to America. Although their metal work is unknown, the Olmecs were Master Masons and Stone workers. They are also known for their colossal head sculptures; these are represented in a mixture of negroid (lips and nose) and Asian (eyes) facial details. All wear more or less some time of headgear; sometimes the ears are also decorated with diverse types of earings.
