Pepe Santiago

Alebrijes are figures of animals or magical creatures. These are carved out of the wood from Copal and hand painted. Usually this process is done by whole families. Normally the men carve the wood, while the woman paint the figures. Generally each piece bares the name of the man from the household where it is produced.
Most of the can be unassembled to ease the transportation.

The Alebrijes have their origin in 1936 by Pedro Linares from Mexico City. Pedro, a carton craftsman, fell sick, unconscious, and in a deep dream. Without access to doctors or medicine, his family tried to wake him up with house remedies. In his dreams, Pedro dreamed a place where the surrounding area transformed into strange creatures. He saw a donkey with wings, a rooster with bull horns, a lion with a dog face, and other creatures. And all of them screamed - Alebrijes, Alebrijes. In his dream he saw a man, who told him that he did not belong there yet, and showed him the exit. Pedro woke up from his dream in the middle of his funeral, and began crafting these creatures with carton.
